Swiss Country Report on Animal Genetic Ressources

In 2007 and 2015, the FAO published the first and second report on the State of the World’s Animal Genetic Resources in collaboration with more than 120 countries, scientific institutions and experts. FAO is currently preparing the publication of the third report on the State of the World, which is expected in 2027.

To this end, it has invited the individual countries to complete a questionnaire. The aim is to provide information on the animal genetic resources in the country and to show the progress made in implementing the global action plan. The Federal Office for Agriculture is responsible for Switzerland's animal genetic resources and therefore also for the country report to the FAO. There are currently 38 local Swiss breeds of seven species in Switzerland. In addition, a large number of non-local breeds and other species (e.g. llama, alpaca, water buffalo) are also used in Swiss agriculture.

On behalf of the Federal Office for Agriculture, the most important developments in the management of animal genetic resources in Switzerland are collected and described in the project. In addition to literature research, relevant stakeholders (breeding organisations, livestock farming organisations, NGOs and research institutions) are interviewed. The project makes an important contribution to Switzerland's Country Report on Animal Genetic Resources to the FAO.
